This photo by Diane Arbus is very
effective. It incorporates good balance and symmetry as the girls are dressed
and look the same. They both take up the same amount of space in the photo. It
almost looks like one is the reflection of the other. The monochrome colours
really emphasize the similarities between the two girls.
Lisa Quinones really captures the subject’s
emotion in this photo. The strong contrast in high light and shadows emphasizes
his muscles and the beads of sweat on his forehead, showing his intense
emotions and strength. The eye is drawn directly to the subject using the rule
of thirds and selective focus.
Annie Leibovitz’s photo of Michelle Obama
is very effective. By using side lighting to cast shadows, creating contrast
between highlight and shadow, her
collarbones and shoulder are accentuated, making her seems very elegant and
beautiful, but also strong. By taking the photo in profile and as a slight
silhouette, it creates the sense of importance, like one cannot see her true self.
The photo also uses rule of thirds to make her neck the centre of interest,
which shows her strength. It also leads the eye up to her face.
