Larry Clark Untitled (Kids), 1995

Larry Clark

In this photo, the man is established as the focal point using the rule of thirds. The extreme highlights and shadows make the photo more intense and powerful. The heavy contrast and the man’s knitted brows create a mood of anger or intense focus.

John Baldessari, Pure Beauty

In this photo, John Baldessari uses negative space to draw attention to the focal point, which is the girl. Additionally, this focal point is emphasized with the rule of thirds, and as a result the first thing the eye notices is the girls shoulder. The girl’s arm is used as a leading line to the secondary focal point, which is the girls face and the tree. This photo is a very simple example of contempory photography as it very clearly captures the world from a unique perspective, one where the girl is tall enough to kiss a palm tree, when in reality she isn’t.

The Leaning Tower Of Pisa, Martin Parr

In this photo, the main focal point is the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which is established using the rule of thirds. It is also the brightest part of the image, making it stand out more. The eye then travels down to the tourists below the tower, firstly the women because she is largest and afterward the 2 men, all posing as if they are holding up the tower. This was part of Martin Parr’s Small World series where he revealed the not so perfect aspects of holiday destinations. In this one, he captures the absurdity of the scenario, because even though they are all pretending to hold up the tower showing how common and old the joke is!

Nan One Month After Being Battered, Nan Goldin

In this photo, Nan’s face is the focal point for two reasons. Firstly, the use of negative space draws the attention to her, and the sharp contrast of light on Nan, against the dark background allows her to stand out. This is from her photo book “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency” and this photo is of her physical injuries after her boyfriend abused her. The photo evokes a sense of pain through the heavy flash and strong colours, which emphasize both her bruises and her neatly applied red lipstick. I think that her lipstick is a very important aspect to the image. It seems to be an act of defiance in that she is not going to run from the problem, but fight it. This photo is an incredible way to turn her attack into something proactive by inspiring people to take action against domestic violence.
